Nutrient management in October
- Utilise soiled water
- Application of 1,000 gallons/acre of soiled water supplies ~5kg N/ha to swards (4 units N/acre)
- Follow grazed paddocks with soiled water where the weather allows
- 1 in 3 farmers haven’t applied lime in the last 5 years according to a survey carried out by Teagasc at this years ploughing
- Liming is an essential part of grassland performance as it unlocks N, P & K
- All paddocks should be considered for liming between now and the end of the
year if not done already
Hit residuals on farm
- Graze outs need to be prioritised on farm as we head into the final rotation
- It’s the last opportunity to clean off swards and set them up for spring
- Pre grazing yield is now 2,229 kg DM/ha
- Keep silage from the diet of cows where possible
- Use a strip wire for 12 or 24 hour allocations to achieve residual
Update fodder budgets
- There has been a great response to fodder budgets so far
- The recovery of grass growth since the drought has allowed for surplus cuts of silage to be taken across the country in the past month
- It is important to update your PBI fodder budget to assess the level of fodder available now that surplus has been brought into the yard before animals are housed
