Brown podzolic

  • Formed in acidic conditions
  • Tends to be free-draining

Photograph of a brown podzolic soil profile showing a dark organic-rich surface layer over reddish-brown subsoil and lighter material at depth. The profile displays clear horizon changes typical of moderately leached soils. A measuring scale marked in centimetres stands vertically along the left side of the soil pit.

  • Found mainly in the south of the country

Map of Ireland titled “Brown Podzolic Soils.” Green highlighted areas show where brown podzolic soils are dominant, while light blue shading indicates areas where they also occur. The soils are concentrated mainly in the south, southeast, northwest, and parts of the west coast. County boundaries are outlined in grey, with a legend distinguishing dominant and associated areas.
