Neal Folliard

Walsh Scholar

Research Interests

Neal’s research focuses on improving the sustainability of beef production systems through greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies. His interests include mixed crop–ruminant livestock systems, methane reduction through nutritional interventions, nutrient circularity, and the use of locally grown feed sources to support climate-smart agriculture.

Current Projects

Neal is a Walsh Scholar on the FACCE ERA-GAS funded international project Integrity, involving partners across nine countries in South America, Europe, and Oceania. His research examines the effects of mixed crop–ruminant livestock systems on GHG emissions from beef production and evaluates the potential of oilseed rape by-products, including high-oil rapeseed cake and rapeseed oil, to reduce methane emissions while maintaining animal performance.

Education

Neal graduated with a BSc in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin in 2018 and subsequently worked as an agricultural advisor. In 2021, he completed an MSc in Agri-food Sustainability and Technology at the University of Galway, where he developed expertise in sustainability, climate change mitigation, research writing, and data analysis. During his postgraduate training, he established a yeast production platform for use in animal nutrition trials and gained experience in biochemical analysis of feed and animal samples. Neal began his Walsh Scholarship in January 2023.
