NUTRITIVE

nutritive project logoInnovative Decision-Making Tool for Defining the Most Suitable Manure Management Strategies to Achieve a Sustainable Livestock Farming System During the Whole Value Chain.

Livestock farming accounts for ~40% of EU agricultural output (~€170 bn), produces 1.4 billion tonnes of manure annually and contributes to emissions and soil and water pollution. Manure management is key to mitigating emissions, enhancing nutrient recycling and reduce reliance on chemical fertiliser use. Despite significant efforts to improve manure management, many environmental challenges remain and require better decision-making tools and innovative solutions.

Project Duration: 2024-2028

Objectives

The Nutritive project is developing a Decision Support System (DSS) to help farmers, advisors, and policymakers identify sustainable manure management strategies by assessing environmental, economic, and social impacts.

The project aims to:

  • Create an updated inventory of manure management solutions
  • Investigate innovative and circular solutions to reduce emissions.
  • Optimise management strategies to minimise environmental emissions.
  • Assess the sustainability of manure management in environment, economic, and social aspects.
  • Develop simplified life cycle assessment (LCA) models.
  • Integrate knowledge into a decision-making tool (DSS).
  • Formulate technical guidelines and policy recommendations.

Actions

  • Global inventory of current manure management practices in Europe.
  • Analysis of manure-derived pollutants and their impact on biodiversity
  • Development of circular strategies and life cycle assessment models.
  • Creation of decision-making tool to implement technical and policy recommendations.

Outcomes

Nutritive aims to support a more sustainable livestock sector by enabling farmers and policymakers to make informed decisions that balance environmental protection with productive and profitable farming.
