The Teagasc Organics team hosted a webinar on Wednesday, 1 April which focused on making quality grass silage on organic farms. Webinar host Elaine Leavy, Teagasc Organic Specialist was joined by Marianne Mulhall and Cathal McCauley, Teagasc Organic Advisors.
Marianne discussed the impact of silage quality on animal performance, based off the results of samples taken on organic farms at the end of 2025. Cathal provided an overview of how to make enough good quality silage on organic farms.

Growing of Protein Crops
Wednesday, 4th March 2026
This episode of Let’s Talk Organics focused on the growing of protein crops. Webinar host Elaine Leavy, Teagasc Organic Specialist was joined by Martin Bourke, Teagasc Organic Specialist and Pete Iannetta, James Hutton Institute in Scotland.
After oats, intercrops containing a grain and legume crop grown side by side, are the most common tillage crop grown on Irish organic tillage farms. Martin and Pete presented the finding of research trials and gave their experience of growing intercrops in Ireland and Scotland.

Composting Farmyard Manure for Livestock Farmers

On this episode of Let’s Talk Organics which took place on Wednesday, 4th February, webinar host Joe Kelleher, Teagasc Organic Specialist was joined by Tommy Reidy, Kerry organic farmer and Koen Willekens of ILVO in Belgium to provide an insight into composting farmyard manure for livestock farmers. A questions and answers session took place at the end of the presentations which was facilitated by Marianne Mulhall, Teagasc Organic Advisor.
This webinar aimed to inform livestock farmers as why they should compost farmyard manure (FYM), the varying methods of FYM composting and how to achieve optimal results. Koen Willekens of ILVO in Belgium presented the findings on research he has undertaken on the process of composting FYM and Kerry organic farmer, Tommy Reidy outlined how he composts FYM on his organic beef farm in Camp.

The webinar focused on the Irish retail market for organic fresh produce (vegetables and fruit), and provided advice for growers doing business with supermarket buyers.
