Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process used by Teagasc to formally identify, assess and acknowledge prior learning. RPL may allow you to:
- Gain entry to a Teagasc programme
- Be exempt from components of a programme
- Receive credit for part of a programme
- Be eligible for a QQI award linked to a Teagasc programme
Teagasc ensures that all RPL decisions protect the standards and integrity of its programmes and QQI awards. Any learning used for RPL must be equivalent to the learning outcomes and assessment standards of the Teagasc programme.
What Evidence is Accepted
Teagasc will only accept:
- Official transcripts from awarding bodies for learning already assessed as part of another programme
- Completion of same assessments as other students on the Teagasc programme
How the RPL Process Works
The RPL process involves:
- Identifying the programme or award
- Checking if you are eligible for RPL
- Submitting a formal RPL application
- Deciding if exemptions or credits can be granted
Teagasc will provide information on programme modules, learning outcomes and awards and will support you through the application process.
Who Can Apply
To apply for RPL you must:
- Hold a further or higher education and training award at the appropriate NFQ level
- Have at least three years direct relevant prior learning work experience
- Be willing to complete assessments and any required coursework
- Show commitment to completing the RPL process
- Be prepared to work with a designated tutor
- Complete the RPL application form and pay the required fee
Some programmes may still require you to complete specific coursework or the full programme.
Exemptions or Credits
- Exemptions or credits are granted only where appropriate evidence at the relevant NFQ level is provided.
- Credits are awarded at pass level only.
- You will be advised which parts of the programme you still need to complete.
- Course fees are based on the amount of coursework required.
