Equine Studies at Kildalton College
Teagasc Kildalton College plays a leading role in educating the next generation of equine professionals. The college offers QQI Level 5 and Level 6 Horsemanship programmes that combine academic learning with extensive practical experience. Designed to meet the needs of the modern equine industry, these courses prepare students for successful careers in riding, coaching, horse production and yard management.
QQI Level 5 Certificate in Horsemanship
The Level 5 programme provides students with a strong foundation in horsemanship, horse care and riding. Throughout the year, students develop practical skills through daily hands-on work with horses while gaining a thorough understanding of the scientific principles that underpin equine management.

Students ride daily across the disciplines of dressage, showjumping and cross-country while also developing essential skills in lunging, loose schooling, groundwork and the care of young horses. Practical learning is reinforced through industry visits and work experience, ensuring graduates develop the confidence and competence across the sport horse and thoroughbred sectors.
QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Horsemanship (Equitation)
The Level 6 programme builds upon the knowledge and practical skills gained at Level 5, with a greater emphasis on leadership, coaching and the production of young horses. Students take increasing responsibility within the college yard while refining their riding ability and developing the professional skills expected of future industry leaders.

A distinctive feature of the programme is the opportunity to work with three and four-year-old horses, progressing them through breaking, schooling and preparation for competition or sale. Students also gain valuable experience in supervising yard operations and developing coaching techniques, with many choosing to work towards British Horse Society qualifications alongside their studies.
Learning through experience
Students work with approximately 50 horses across outstanding equestrian facilities, including an indoor arena, outdoor arenas, an all-weather cross-country track and a dedicated breeding enterprise. Daily involvement in horse care, training and yard management allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a practical environment while developing the professionalism, work ethic and attention to detail expected throughout the equine industry.
Career opportunities
Graduates of the Kildalton Equitation programme are highly regarded throughout Ireland and internationally. Alumni have gone on to establish successful careers as professional riders, coaches, yard managers, young horse producers, competition grooms and equine business owners. The programme also provides an excellent platform for further education and progression within the equine sector.
