Avelda Ferreira

headshotProject Title: “Bovine tuberculosis in Ireland: Understanding temporal
changes and potential for new policies”

Overview: Avelda’s primary interest is veterinary epidemiology. She completed a BSc in Animal Husbandry at
Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands, where she analysed
management factors influencing Hepatitis E prevalence in slaughter age in pigs.
She then pursued an MSc in Animal Sciences at Wageningen University, specialising in Quantitative
Veterinary Epidemiology. Her MSc research focused on modelling the transmission of the Hepatitis
E virus in a farrow-to-finish pig farm, as well as conducting a retrospective study on Equine Arteritis
Virus seroprevalence in horses tested by the National Reference Laboratory of the Netherlands.
Currently, she is looking at bovine tuberculosis in the Republic of Ireland using quantitative and
qualitative approaches to gain new insights into an age old problem.
