Harikrishnan Manikyaparambil
Project Title: Development of Bio-based Compostable Active Films Using Chitosan and Seaweed Extracts for Food Packaging Applications
Overview: Harikrishnan, from India, is currently pursuing his PhD funded by the prestigious Walsh Scholarship. His project, “Development of Bio-based Compostable Active Films Using Chitosan and Seaweed Extracts for Food Packaging Applications,” reflects his commitment to environmental sustainability. The increasing reliance on petroleum-based plastics has significantly impacted the environment, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable alternatives. Ireland’s abundant seaweed resources and underutilized agricultural and food industry waste present untapped opportunities for innovation.
Harikrishnan aims to develop compostable packaging materials from seaweed extracts and industry waste, specifically targeting meat and fish packaging applications. His academic journey began with a bachelors in Food Engineering from Kerala Agricultural University, followed by a master’s degree from the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management. Before his PhD, he served as a Project Associate at India’s National Institute of Interdisciplinary Science and Technology, gaining experience in biodegradable packaging material production from agricultural waste. His ambition is to develop scalable solutions applicable to diverse industry sizes. Alongside research, Harikrishnan enjoys sports and travel, maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
