headshotProject Title: Investigating the impact of agronomic factors on the microbiome of Horticultural produce

Overview:  Originating from the heart of India’s central plains, Madhya Pradesh—a region renowned for its rich heritage and agricultural prominence—Maryada’ s path into microbiology is intricately connected to her roots, reflecting a profound bond between her origins and scientific pursuits. As a Walsh Scholar and PhD candidate at Teagasc, her research focuses on examining how agronomic practices influence the microbial communities associated with horticultural produce. While the microbiome of fresh fruits and vegetables plays a pivotal role in food quality and safety, the extent to which farming techniques shape these microbial ecosystems remains an area of ongoing exploration. Her study seeks to identify the ways in which agricultural variables impact microbial diversity, with the broader objective of enhancing food security and promoting sustainable farming. With growing awareness of the relationship between diet, microbiota, and overall well-being, her work aims to support more informed agricultural and food production strategies.

Maryada brings valuable industry experience to her research, having worked as a Microbiology Laboratory Technician at ALS Life Sciences Ltd., where she specialized in pathogen screening and quality control in food products. She holds a Master’s degree in Food Microbiology from University College Cork and a Bachelor’s degree in General Microbiology from Career College, Bhopal.

Beyond her scientific endeavours, she enjoys immersing herself in different cultures, traveling, and staying updated with advancements in microbial sciences. She aspires to contribute meaningful research that bridges microbiology, agriculture, and food safety.
