Mathijs Dejong

headshotProject Title: Understanding and responding to aphid vectored Potato Virus Y

Overview: Mathijs is conducting research on the Potato Virus Y (PVY), which is ranked the 5th most important plant virus worldwide. PVY can cause large yield losses and reduce potato tuber quality. Also in Ireland, this is the most important virus in potato.

The first part of his research will be focused on identifying which aphid species are responsible for transmitting PVY and which other viruses are present in potato crops in Ireland. He will also be investigating the interaction between aphid behaviour, cultivar and PVY infection in relation to resistance. Another part of his research is aimed at finding farming practices that can reduce PVY incidence in the field. Altogether, this PhD aims to provide potato growers with sustainable solutions for combatting PVY and thereby contributes to working towards global food security.

Mathijs has experience with conducting field trials, working on insect-virus interactions and performing experiments involving aphids. He also has experience in carrying out molecular techniques and statistical analyses using Rstudio.

He moved from his home country, the Netherlands, to Ireland in January (2025). When he’s not at work he enjoys going on hikes, cooking and playing sports.
