headshotProject Title: Technology to reduce in-field fertiliser nitrogen emissions and enhance agronomic performance/ DAFM Inhibitors project

Overview: Niall studied in UCD majoring in animal science, coming from dairy background on 70 cows with autumn and spring calving, Niall has worked in the advisory side of Teagasc in Kilkenny and Wicklow on derogations and dairy. His research is focused on nitrification/ urease inhibitors with specific concentration on the urease inhibitor NBPT N-(n-Butyl) Thiophosphoric Triamide. Investigating its potential to leach into ground water using lysimeters to simulate real world conditions and using UHPLC-MS to analyse. This research will be used to evaluate its potential to cause any environmental or health hazards.

Nialls research will also investigate the effect of different timings of lime application has on the ability NBPT has on reducing ammonia emissions. This research will aid farmers and advisors on judging when to apply lime and protected urea.

Niall has also worked as a secondary school teacher teaching biology and junior cert science.
