Samson Mwangi Ithagu

HeadshotProject Title: Genetic evaluation of Gestation Length in Irish Dairy Cattle

Overview:

Samson is a PhD candidate at University College Cork, based at Teagasc Moorepark, focusing on developing robust national genetic evaluations for gestation length in Irish dairy cattle. His research examines the complex interplay between genetics and environment, leveraging extensive data from Irish research farms and national breeding records. By identifying anomalies in gestation length recordings and assessing their impact on evaluations, his work aims to deliver actionable insights that drive more accurate genetic evaluations and promote safer, more effective calving practices.

Beyond his research, Samson is passionate about forging strategic partnerships and building networks to drive future collaborations in livestock development projects in developing countries. Hailing from Kenya, he brings valuable international experience from diverse livestock projects and holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Animal Science from Egerton University. When not absorbed in research, Samson enjoys hiking, traveling, connecting with new people, working on farms and following exciting sports events.
