Vera Capistrano Virtudes
Project Title: Assuring the chemical safety of organic waste spread on land in Ireland
Overview: Vera is focused on studying and addressing the presence of veterinary drug residues in animal
waste. The widespread use of these drugs in livestock farming has raised concerns about their
impact on the environment. Most of these drugs are excreted through manure, and when this
manure is used as fertilizer, it can introduce harmful substances into the soil, water, and air,
affecting not only the environment but also non-target organisms. Vera’s work aims to better
understand these risks and find effective solutions to minimize their impact.
Vera was born and raised in Cebu City, Philippines. She is a licensed Chemist and licensed
Chemical Technician. She obtained her degree in Chemistry from the University of San Carlos.
