Zain Ul Abidin
Project Title
Multi-scale Exploration and deployment of Remote Sensing Technology for mapping drainage status and type
Biography
Zain Ul Abidin is a PhD researcher in Geography at Trinity College Dublin, funded by the Walsh Scholarship Programme in collaboration with Teagasc. His research focuses on mapping drained peat soils in Ireland using Earth Observation and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Peatlands are a vital part of Ireland’s landscape, acting as major carbon stores, but when drained they release large amounts of greenhouse gases. By combining satellite imagery, GIS, and machine learning, Zain’s work aims to create accurate maps of drained peatlands, helping Ireland to better understand and reduce agricultural emissions.
His background is in geophysics and data analytics, and he has experience with remote sensing, environmental mapping, and computer-based analysis. He works with tools such as ArcGIS Pro, Google Earth Engine, and Python, and is building expertise in linking field data with satellite observations.
Originally from Pakistan, Zain is motivated by a strong interest in climate change and sustainable land management. Outside of his research, he enjoys hiking, travelling, and exploring Ireland’s natural landscapes.
