Robert Pim
Project Title:
Enhancing Genetic Diversity and Adaptability of Four Key Broadleaf Tree Species in Ireland for Sustainable Forest Diversification in the Face of Climate Change
Biography:
Robert studied natural sciences at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree. He then earned a Master of Science in Ecology and Conservation from Uppsala University in Sweden. His thesis focused on the establishment of trees after following wildfire in boreal forests.
He is currently based at Teagasc, at the Ashtown Research Centre, working on four key broadleaf species important to Ireland’s forest ecosystems: Downy Birch, Silver Birch, Beech and Common Alder. His research aims to identify better performing and climate-resilient individuals within these species. By selecting and recording these exceptional trees, Robert is contributing to long-term breeding programme that will enhance the resilience, reliability, and profitability of forest planting stock. This work supports Ireland’s forestry industry and its afforestation targets, particularly regarding native species.
Outside of work, Robert enjoys growing vegetables and running in the mountains.
