Lucía Gill

Lucia GillProject Title:Using Precision fertiliser management with perennial ryegrass/white clover swards to further increase the sustainability of dairy grazing systems

Biography: Lucía investigates ways to improve and refine nitrogen (N) fertiliser management in pasture-based dairy systems at Teagasc Moorepark. The experiment compares perennial ryegrass swards receiving 200 kg N/ha (Gr200), perennial ryegrass-white clover swards with 150 kg N/ha (Cl150), and a precision white clover system receiving up to 150 kg N/ha (Pr150). It will be measured impacts on grass yield, feed quality, milk output, and environmental impact through nutrient balance and N leaching. The main goal is to find N fertiliser strategies that reduce N losses while maintaining dairy productivity.
This research is key to supporting sustainable farming and climate goals, where efficient N use, reduced emissions, nutrient losses and water quality are priorities in EU and national policies. Lucía’s work will contribute to low-N farming and enhance adaptation. Improving N use efficiency reduces N emissions, preserves soil health and protects water quality, essential for the sustainability and competitiveness of grass-based dairy systems.
Lucía is from Uruguay and holds an MSc from Uruguay’s University, with research on farm intensification, productivity and nutrient balance. She has also gained practical experience from dairy farms in New Zealand and an internship in the USA focused on technology in animal production.
