Project Title: Enhancing biotic stress resilience in Barley

Biography: Éabhas research focuses on plant immunity and genetic engineering. The irish barley crop dominates the tillage sector despite constant disease pressures in the field. As we move away from the use of chemical fungicides that are both expensive and harmful to the environment, it is important to develop new strategies for disease resistance.

ResBarley aims to exploit Susceptibility genes (S genes) as an alternative method for disease management. Any gene that aids in the infection process of a pathogen can be classified as an S gene. Éabha will gain experience in genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR-CAS9 to remove such genes from the crop, which should generate transgenic barley with more durable resistance to disease.
