Emily Cassells
Project Title: Evaluating techniques to estimate dry matter intake of dairy cows grazing diverse swards
Biography: Emily is a PhD student and Walsh Scholar at Teagasc Moorepark Research Centre. Her research focuses on improving the measurement of dry matter intake (DMI) in dairy cows that graze on diverse pasture swards. DMI is a crucial factor that influences milk production, animal efficiency and environmental performance. However, accurately measuring what cows eat while grazing remains a significant challenge in pasture-based dairy systems.
Her PhD research evaluates and compares different techniques for estimating DMI, with emphasis on the n-alkane method and the ytterbium faecal index technique, specifically when cows graze on diverse swards comprised of grasses, legumes and herbs. This research contributes to improving the accuracy of grazing experiments, strengthening genetic evaluations and supporting the development of sustainable dairy systems.
Emily has experience in animal experimentation, herbage and faecal sampling and laboratory-based chemical analysis. She holds a First Class Honours in Agricultural Science (BAgrSc) from University College Dublin, where she majored in Animal and Crop Production and gained international experience through a study abroad programme at Iowa State University. Additionally, she received a Stage 4 Academic Award while studying at University College Dublin.
Having grown up on a dairy and beef farm, Emily has a strong personal and professional interest in pasture-based dairy systems.
