Sherin Maria Saji
Project Title: Shouldering the Burden: Understanding the economic and social impacts of sudden farm deaths and traumatic injuries on farm enterprises, families and communities
Biography: Sherin is a PhD researcher at Teagasc and University College Dublin, exploring what happens to farm families, farming businesses and community in the aftermath of a serious injury or sudden death. Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in the world, yet the financial, emotional and social toll on those affected remains poorly understood. By addressing this gap, Sherin’s research aims to improve the supports available to farm households and contribute to the broader goal of farmer health, safety and wellbeing.Drawing on national data and in-depth interviews with those directly affected, Sherin is building a clearer picture of the true cost of farm injuries; and what families really need to cope and recover. Her findings will shape practical recommendations for key stakeholders and support organisations.
Sherin brings a strong interdisciplinary background in social sciences, economics and agricultural science, giving her a unique perspective on the human side of farming. Her work forms part of the Teagasc-led, Horizon Europe funded SafeHabitus project.
Originally from India, Sherin is passionate about using research to make a real difference for rural communities and the people who depend on agriculture.
