Craig Gilsenan
Project Title: Understanding the Biological Drivers of Feed, Environmental and Carcass Efficiency in Beef Cattle
Biography Craig is aiming to understand the biological mechanisms underpinning differences across feed efficiency, environmental efficiency and carcass gain efficiency in three diverse genotypes of animals (dairy, dairy-beef, and beef). the three groups will be reared under identical management regimes from birth to slaughter in a grass-based production system. this research will allow, identification of the life stages where animals are least/most efficient within genotype and providing an opportunity to exploit these key stages, ultimately converting grass into carcass gain more efficiently, reaching target weights sooner and producing less methane per kilogram of beef. Craig’s research project contributes to supporting sustainable farming as well as improving the competitiveness of the beef industry by optimizing farm systems.
