Project Title: Urban Bio – Sustainable production of nanocellulose and lignin from urban woody biomass and their application in water purification membranes
Biography: Hashin’s research focuses on the development of sustainable membranes using nanocellulose and lignin for water and wastewater treatment. He is investigating how these bio-based materials can be used to remove pollutants such as dyes, heavy metals and other contaminants from food, dairy and textile wastewater.
A key part of his work is understanding how the membrane fabrication process affects its performance, including water flow, pollutant removal, fouling, cleaning and reuse. His research also looks beyond laboratory performance by considering the environmental impact and cost of producing these membranes through life-cycle assessment and techno-economic assessment.
His broader research goal is to help develop more sustainable water treatment technologies and reduce reliance on conventional petroleum-based membrane materials. Hashin has experience in polymer science, membrane fabrication and membrane characterisation for water treatment, and is also developing expertise in sustainability assessment.
