Umar Amjid

Project Title:Leveraging the cFMD – the World’s First Curated Food Metagenomic Database: Harnessing the Potential of Fermentation for Healthy and Sustainable Foods as Past of Domino EU project.

Biography: Umar Amjid is a Walsh Scholar at Teagasc Moorepark and an affiliated researcher in the Department of Microbiology at University College Cork. He studies the microorganisms that live in gut, food and food production environments, exploring how these microbial communities change, evolve, and adapt using large-scale DNA sequencing data and advanced bioinformatics tools.

As part of the DOMINO EU project, Umar works with the curated Food Metagenomics Database (cFMD) to better understand food-associated microbiomes. His research contributes to improving food safety and food security by identifying beneficial and harmful microorganisms, understanding how they evolve, and generating knowledge that can support innovation in the food industry.

Umar has expertise in clinical & food microbiome analysis, microbial genomics, metagenomics, evolutionary microbiology, and bioinformatics. His work combines computational analysis with microbiology to uncover patterns in complex datasets and translate them into practical applications for research and industry.

Through data-driven microbiome research, Umar aims to help develop more sustainable, safer, and evidence-based food systems while advancing our understanding of the microbial world.
