Project Title: Linking soil microbiomes to soil health in pasture systems

Biography: Jositta George is a Walsh Scholar and PhD researcher at Teagasc Johnstown Castle and the University of Galway. She is investigating how microorganisms living in soil influence soil health in Irish grassland farming systems.
Healthy soils are essential for producing food, protecting water quality, supporting biodiversity, and helping agriculture adapt to climate change. However, many of the microorganisms that drive important soil processes remain poorly understood. Jositta’s research aims to understand how these microbial communities contribute to nutrient cycling, carbon storage, and overall soil function. By identifying links between soil microbes, farming practices, and soil health, her work will help support more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems. This research also contributes to wider European efforts to monitor and improve soil health.
Jositta has a background in biotechnology and bioinformatics and has experience analysing microbiome sequencing data using tools such as QIIME2, R, and Linux-based bioinformatics workflows.
