Project Title: Utilising Advanced Milking Technology and Herd Milk Recording to Improve the Sustainability of Irish Dairy Farms
Biography: Lucy Power is a Walsh Scholar based at Teagasc Moorepark and University College Dublin. With a background in biochemistry, molecular biology and clinical nutrition, she is researching how advanced milking technologies and herd milk recording can improve the sustainability of Irish dairy farms.
Her research investigates how milking equipment, milk recording systems, image phenotyping and farmer interactions with technology influence milk quality, udder health, and mastitis management. By analysing herd data, evaluating emerging technologies and working with farmers, Lucy aims to identify practical ways to improve decision-making on farms, reduce somatic cell counts and support more effective mastitis control. Her research also explores how international best practices in milk recording could be adapted for use in Ireland.
Improving milk quality and udder health can enhance animal welfare, reduce antibiotic use, improve farm profitability and support the environmental, social and economic sustainability of Irish dairy farming.
Lucy has experience in scientific research, data analysis and image phenotyping, bringing an interdisciplinary perspective to the application of technology in dairy production.
