Farjana Shimo
Project Title: Tracing Carbon: Refining CO₂ Emission Factors from Urea and Protected Urea in Irish Soils
Biography: Farjana Jannat Shimo is a Walsh Scholar based at Teagasc Johnstown Castle and University College Dublin. Her research focuses on improving our understanding of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from agricultural soils following the application of urea and protected urea fertilisers in Irish grassland systems.
Agriculture plays a vital role in Ireland’s economy, but it is also a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Farjana’s work aims to develop more accurate, soil-specific CO₂ emission factors for Irish conditions, helping to improve national greenhouse gas inventories and support climate-smart agricultural practices. Her research combines literature synthesis, data analysis, and field-based measurements to evaluate how different fertiliser management strategies influence carbon emissions from soils.
Farjana has a background in soil science and environmental research, with experience in soil sampling, laboratory analysis, environmental monitoring, and data management. Through her PhD, she is gaining further expertise in greenhouse gas emissions, soil carbon cycling, and sustainable nutrient management.
Originally from Bangladesh, she enjoys learning about different cultures, travelling, and exploring Ireland in her free time.
