Sankalp KatariyaProject title Smart Monitoring of Membrane Filtration Systems in Dairy Protein Processing

Biography: Sankalp Katariya is a PhD Walsh Scholar at Teagasc Moorepark and Munster Technological University. He is researching smart monitoring of membrane filtration, a key step used to separate and concentrate proteins from milk in dairy processing.

At present, most filtration systems are run and cleaned on fixed schedules or guided by indirect indicators, rather than by what is actually happening at the membrane. This can lead to more energy, cleaning chemicals and other resources being used than necessary, and to membranes wearing out sooner. Sankalp is using sensors to collect real-time data during filtration, then processing and visualising it to build a clearer picture of how the process behaves. The aim is to help dairy processors improve energy efficiency and reduce waste without compromising product quality, supporting a more sustainable dairy industry.

Sankalp has five years of academic experience in chemical engineering and an MSc in Food Technology from Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands. His six-month internship in membrane filtration of proteins at laboratory and pilot scale helps transfer skills to this project.

Sankalp is from western India, and cooking is his favourite way to unwind.
